Fire Marshals Often Require Emergency Communications Systems for New Commercial Multi-Story Construction

A bi-directional amplification (BDA) or emergency radio communications enhancement system (ERCES), offers great value and peace of mind for commercial building owners and occupants. In the event of an emergency, first responders need to be able to communicate with each other inside the affected building and with their command staff outside the building. This happens across the public safety radio network with designated bands and frequencies.

BDA-coverage-challenges

In many cases, buildings have dead spots where the signal strength for two-radios is not strong enough, which can cause delays and miscommunication when seconds count. This can occur due to building materials, architectural design, or simply the geographic location of the building.

Factors to consider for in-building emergency communications include:

  • Provides enhanced radio coverage within a multi-story building
  • Ensures emergency responders can stay in communication with each other
  • Is increasingly mandated by state and local fire codes
  • Should be installed by certified technicians
  • Provides peace of mind with complete cellular coverage when an emergency arises

Interesting Fact

BDA systems have several acronyms across the industry such as:
  • ERRCS – Emergency Responder Radio Communication System
  • ERCES – Emergency Radio Communication Enhancement System
  • BDA – Bi-Directional Antenna system
  • DAS – Distributed Antenna Systems

Typically, these are all the same system but may have different features and functionality, such as designed for two-way radios or for cell phones. The systems we focus on are public safety BDA systems used to assist first responders in the event of an emergency.
